What Models of Therapy Do We Use?

Our mental health clinicians are professionally trained in a range of therapeutic modalities to best support your mental health. Common approaches our clinicians will use include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Emotion-Focused Therapies, Somatic Therapies, and Mindfulness.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

As an evidence-based treatment for anxiety and depression, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is perhaps one of the most well-known mental health treatments out there. Over the years, CBT has been found to be useful for treatment of generalized and social anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. With its focus on positive thinking and challenging negative thought patterns, CBT helps individuals reorient themselves to build a better life and move past those things we cannot control. However, CBT is not for everyone and some may find other treatments more useful.

Dialetical Behavioural

Therapy (DBT).

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is a type of CBT that was created to treat borderline personality disorder by focusing on helping people learn to manage their emotions, cope with distress, and improve their relationships. Since its inception, DBT has been found to be useful for working with a range of mood and personality disorders, including individuals with Autism, ADHD, and other neurodivergent clients.

Emotion-Focused

Therapies

Emotion-Focused Therapies (EFT) help individuals move past being 'stuck' by their emotional responses to situations, both external and internal, by learning how to identify and manage these emotional responses. Individuals may find their reaction to a situation is more distressing than the situation itself, making EFT approaches suitable for moving past this block and building a more stable future.

Somatic

Therapies

Somatic Therapies are a broad range of approaches emphasizing the connection between the mind and body in healing. These therapies recognize that trauma, stress, and emotional distress often manifest physically in the body. Therefore, these approaches incorporate body-centered techniques to address symptoms. Some examples are Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Somatic Experiencing.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment and can be found in many cultures across the world. It involves observing your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations with curiousity and acceptance. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction was designed to help clients dealing with issues of chronic pain and has since been found to be useful for the treatment of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress.
